Cleaning Br Item?

I was trying to clean a very, very dirty br candleholder; it was put up in an attic for decades. Without paying any attention to the directions, I applied Tarnex and polished. No good. Then I got to reading the label, (afterwards, how stupid, I know) and come to find out, Tarnex should not be used on Br! The piece still looked about the same, and now I have been using Bro on it and cannot seem to make any real headway. The piece still looks dark brown. Did I ruin it with the Tarnex or does it just need more elbow grease? I have been rubbing gently with the Bro, then a dry soft cloth, then using a brush on the crevices, several times. it doesnt seem to make any difference.
